While not a huge fan of them myself, I can partially understand. Unlike most furs, Avians can:

A: Fly, fulfilling the Human desire of Escapism
B: Lay Eggs. Personally, I find it kind of hot, although there's a Certain Air of Mystery to it as well.
C: They're REALLY not all that common. Frankly, every douchbag kid that hears about the Fur community becomes a Dragon, Wolf, or a Lion, or a Bear or a Bull. Why? Those are Strong Animals, ones that show Leadership skills, or are just awesome on their own. That's half the reason I'm a mouse, frankly...I try to Hide myself from f00bs (Fur n00bs :F)I don't like being associated with them.

Most kids that do that sort of crap don't take the time to do research into it, or Meditate on it at all. They just go "Oh! you're a Mouse? Then I'm a Lion!"

I like avians myself. Well, I like avians because I like birds. When it comes to avian furry material, it gets a bit more complicated.

In general furry always involves manipulation and reconciliation- between distinct sets of attributes (that of humans and other animals) and trying to make them a whole. For avians this challenge is more difficult, and generally requires more artistic/stylistic license.

By my experience, furs who like avians aren't into them because they're uncommon (that crowd's more into neon markings, a gazillion tails, aliens and multiple species hybrids). They either really like birds themselves or the symbolism that certain birds possess. For example I'm partial to falcons and ravens (e.g. picture attached. You may notice there's a smudge in the bottom right. It used to be my old signature, but I changed handles, so I smudged this one out).

And I myself, I chose a Dragon for myself for one plain and simple reason; I've been a dragon fan since I was like, 3, and I've always been fascinated by anything with dragons. I don't go for them because they're "strong", but that's just me. Plus I just generally love reptiles. Though I agree that a lot of people do tend to go for those types. Mostly Wolf, though...But I tend to see a looot more foxes than anything else in the fandom.

As for the avians; I myself, not much of a fan of most of them, but I do like some. Falcons for sure, for one. It's all in tastes as to why someone likes something, though, in my opinion.

And, well, okay, I admit it. Falcons are strong, independent and are often regarded as awesome on their own. Since they're arguably the "fastest living being alive", identifying with one is like your gateway to furry e-penor or something. Maybe. I don't know. Probably not actually. They're not total f00b (hehe) material for the reasons I listed above: it's harder to do avians convincingly (meaning it's harder to suck cock with a beak that could snip you in half lol) :P

In my case, I also love martial arts so I thought I'd convert the falcon into a kung-fu warrior. It just made sense somehow (once again I blurred out my signature!)

Well, I've always found the beaks and feet most appealing. The wings don't hurt the image, either. I realize this reply is a little less helpful than the others, sorry.

ah where to start?....is it that avians are just cuddly to be with?..useing their fluffy feathered chest as a pillow after the hard throughs of sex?..or their eyes so exotic as they stare back at you so intelligiant?, maybe its their legs so strong yet soft to touch i love avians for the shere fact they just are something different, i admire furries who become species that is not a wolf or a cat, actually i would say more my top three are dragoness, skunks, and mares
