I think it's free for most folks but I recall some people sending Crow money for DVDs or character cameos that never materialized.

I think that if Crow just released a finished game rather than rushing to show folks he's alive things would just work out better. I mean it's been almost a decade now since we first saw High Tail Hall right? It's sort of a Duke Nukem Forever situation (even though that's scheduled for May release). It's been so long that really he just needs to deliver a finished game that works and folks will be more or less satisfied.

No, its just the game developers not wanted to design every single room in a building, so they put a broken door there to take up space and give the illusion that the map is actually bigger than it is. Besides, I always liked broken doors in silent hill, it meant that there was one less chance of a monster coming out of nowhere and pile driving my character into the ground.

I don't remember anything like that in the silent hill games I've played.

I did find crap like that in games like doom 3, where the entire fucking game was nothing but hidde,n sliding doors that are impossible to see and enemies teleporting out of nowhere (which is not only bullshit, but it ruined whatever horror aspect their was in the game, because you knew that all enemy encounters were scripted and it was therefore impossible to prevent any encounter, because they'll just teleport out of fucking nowhere, and every encounter was basically somebody jumping out and saying boo to try and scare you. The encounters were also predictable and pretty damn monotonous, since every 10 steps some enemy was teleporting or coming out of a wall.)
Also had that problem with dead space, where instead of sliding doors and teleportation they had vents in the walls. However dead space at least didn't have every single fucking enemy do that, so it was a much better game.

Some cool stuff in the update, but over all this project is really off-track.

I love the idea, loved the old version, and actually enjoy the character design for the most part (chests are a bit big now, but whatever). And if people don't, eh. There's no accounting for taste.

Design on the other hand...yeah. So here's what's deeply broken here, IMHO:


1. The big, fundamental one. Crow is trying to use flash, a vector graphics system,
to deliver a series of pre-rendered movies with some interactivity. This is a horrible, horrible idea, and until it's fixed the site will keep suffering. I get the sense that he was trying to do things the right way, designing "scenes" with flash elements, but then discovered they wouldn't run smoothly because he was layering on too much fancy stuff. So to "solve" the problem, he just pre-rendered every loop and stuck movies in instead of actually rendering the flash elements in real-time.

If things aren't running at a good FPS, it means you need to optimize, fine-tune the programming, get better at making your system. Not pre-render everything. That just makes everything worse. Look, Flash has limits, just like any creative medium. Creators need to learn to work within those limits, not refuse to admit they exist. Sometimes having an arbitrary technical barrier, a page limit, a time limit, a file size makes for better art anyway. It forces people to come up with things they wouldn't otherwise.

2. Navigation is a nightmare. I count at least THREE DISTINCT navigation systems, all coming and going as they please. Something like this shouldn't even need a navigation system, at least not such an obvious one. We're basically talking MYST Island with sex games instead of puzzles. Just have users click in a direction to go that direction. Give them a little mouse-over action to let them know they can, maybe a bit of a glow on paths, doors, buttons etc. All these arrows are a clusterfuck.

3. HTH is not about HTH. HTH is about sex scenes. So stop obsessing so much about the site, on the site, and get to the good stuff. Here's how it loads right now:

No. Look, I'm a firefoxfag too, but there are limits. You wanna have a little button on the side of your blog, fine. You wanna refuse to support shitty browsers, fine. But don't put a massive, slow-fade, FLASH in the intro to scream at every visitor "USE THIS BROWSER." Flash is pretty much cross-platform anyway, so if your flash website can't run in most modern browsers, you're doing something very, very wrong.

website, etc. Looks nice, but THIS SHOULD NOT EXIST. It should be ordinary html, and it should be part of the HTH html site, not part of the flash game proper. By clicking "Play"...

We finally land on the Map page, which I suppose could be considered the game itself.


That's five, count em, FIVE speed bumps between showing up at HTH and actually getting to the game. And even at the map screen, we still have to select an area and roam around before we find anything remotely interesting.

Here's an alternative that would work much, much better:

So I've been digging through the files for a while now, and looking at the old site that I still have archived, and I gotta say: I kinda feel for him. He had a really ambitious plan, and it looked pretty slick. But Flash just isn't made for pre-rendered movies. You'd almost need a different environment to do what he was trying to.

And my last posts were pretty harsh, so credit where it's due: he's cut out massive amounts of bulk by ditching the movies in the recent version. I think the main hall and files come to about 20 megs after the cull, which is less than ONE HALF OF A SEX SCENE in the old version. Video is a killer. The version I'm messing with is down to about 10 megs; better, but not as much as I hoped.

The problem is, too much work building the world and not enough time building scenes. It reminds me of the last major overhaul. There was all this space but nothing in it, now it's even bigger. I know it's an early release, but get one area made, fill it with .errr... things to do....and then do the next. Also, the 'strip tease' seems buggy.
